Kazi Nazrul University was established under the West Bengal Act XIX of 2012. The Assent of the Governor was first published in the Kolkata Gazette Extraordinary 16th August 2012. Named after the rebel poet, Kazi Nazrul Islam(1899-1976) of India – who is also the national poet of Bangladesh.

The school of Mines and Metallurgy under Kazi Nazrul University, is initiating a three-year diploma and four year B.Tech courses in Mining.Metallurgy and Computer Science to promote technical educationin Paschim Bardhaman which seems to be a educationally backward area but industrially established region.

Objective of the Institute: To promote Technical Education in the industrial urban area of Asansol and neighboring regions. The mining and metallurgical industries are the more job generating sector and controlling countries GDP to almost 50%. Scope of the Institution: Kazi Nazrul University has planned the course for more in plant training with the industries so that more practical experience could be generated.

Area of Focus: In Mining Engineering- i) Modernize mining practices for nonmetallic and metallic bearing minerals. ii) Coal mining and safety provisions for enhanced production.In Metallurgical Engineering-i) Iron & Steel production , ii) Beneficiation of Ores & Minerals with agglomeration practice iii) Heat Treatment of Metals and alloys.
